Tuesday, May 13th, 2008, 7:30 PM - PFLAG Meeting
"Remembering Traditional Values: American Indian Attitudes about Homosexuality"

Before the white European missionaries came to the New World, the vast majority of native American tribes valued all sexual orientations as a gift from The Creator. Two Spirit People - those who possessed the spirit of both woman and man - were often highly revered by their tribes. There certainly was no homophobia, at least not until the white explorers imported it.

Come hear anthropologist Kerry Hawk Lessard of the Chase-Brexton Clinic and a member of the United Remnant Band of Shawnee tell us about the past and present American Indian attitudes about sexuality. She will be joined by Jeannette Johnson, PhD of the Huron Tribe.

This is the first time we have presented a program dealing with the American Indian and homosexuality. There are parallels between the gay liberation movement and the American Indian movement to regain and restore pride in traditional values. We can all learn so much from this presentation. Please join us.

    About Us

PFLAG meetings are free and we welcome everyone. We provide a safe and confidential space for everyone. Teens and young people are invited to participate in our Rainbow Youth Alliance, and new parents are welcomed to meet separately w/another parent for a confidential discussion. We also have an active Parent Forum that meets regularly on another evening.

We have a great group of lesbian and gay members, as well as kids who have gay parents. We don't just celebrate diversity in our chapter...we are diversity!

Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month beginning at 7:30 PM at the Owen Brown Interfaith Center, 7246 Cradlerock Way, Columbia, MD. Most meetings include a speaker and general discussion. There is also time allotted for people to share what is happening in their lives.
