The recipient of this scholarship will be honored at our June 10, 2008 general meeting. Be sure to be there!
Purpose:
To recognize outstanding gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered (LGBT) and straight ally students
To encourage the pursuit of post-secondary education for self-identified LGBT and straight allies
To foster a positive image of LGBT young adults in society
Scholarship Offered:
Howard County PFLAG Academic Scholarship for Outstanding LGBT Youth and Their Straight Allies
Amount of Scholarship: $ 1000.00
Eligibility:
Applicants must be self-identified lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, or a straight ally (i.e., and individual who demonstrates outstanding support directly to LGBT youth and supports equality for all)
Applicants must be high school seniors planning to attend a two- or four-year college or university in the fall of the year they apply
Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
Applicants must be active members of the Rainbow Youth Alliance (RYA) and have been participating in regularly scheduled RYA meetings for at least six months prior to applying (Note: this criteria will be determined by the RYA facilitators)
Applicants must complete a Howard County PFLAG Academic Scholarship application in its entirety including all required supplemental forms
Applicants cannot be receiving full tuition remission from other sources to fund their education (e.g., other full-tuition scholarships, established college trust fund, etc.)
Deadline and Terms of Award:
A completed Howard County PFLAG Academic Scholarship application must be submitted along with all required supplemental materials by May 1st of the year they are applying. Completed applications must be mailed to:

The Scholarship Selection Committee will review all applications at once and make their final decision during the first two weeks of May. All decisions will be sent out in the mail by the last week in May and the scholarship recipient will be publicly announced during the general June meeting, which is typically the meeting that is hosted by the RYA
Scholarship recipients will be announced in various press releases and other print or online media. As a result identity disclosure will most likely be necessary
Scholarship recipient is responsible for providing Howard County PFLAG with a copy of the acceptance letter for the intended post-secondary institution they will be attending. The award will be sent directly to this academic institution and will be sent in $500.00 increments (fall and spring semester)
Application and Supplemental Materials:
General application form (including demographic, educational, and work sections)
Three required essays (200-300 words typed)
1. What impact has your sexual orientation and/or gender identity had on your life?
2. How will you continue promoting LGBT equality while in your college/university of choice?
3. How has membership in Howard County PFLAG, and more specifically in the Rainbow Youth Alliance (RYA), influenced your life?
Three sealed letters of recommendation (with at least one from a teacher and one from an individual in the community). Note: RYA facilitators cannot serve as recommenders.
Academic transcripts (unofficial copies)
Criteria for Evaluating Applicants:
Demonstrated interest and participation in LGBT-related activities through Howard County PFLAG and Rainbow Youth Alliance
Academic potential and/or evidence of academic achievement
Evidence of leadership in community and/or school related activities
Potential to succeed in future goals
